Billström emphasized that NATO should stop wasting time on creating the necessary defense system.
According to Billström, many NATO countries do not fully understand the level of the threat / UNIAN collage, photo – newsroom.consilium.europa.eu, WikipediaThe threat Russia poses to NATO’s eastern flank will never go away. This opinion was expressed by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Tobias Billström, in an interview with Newsweek.
According to him, regardless of the outcome of the war in Ukraine, Russia will remain a threat to Europe, which urgently needs to increase its defense potential. He emphasized that Moscow is involved in the intrusion of drones into the airspace of NATO countries.
“Even after the war, we really have to be aware of the threat that Russia will pose to countries like Sweden and its neighbors on this flank of NATO,” Billström said.
The former head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry is sure that after the end of the war in Ukraine, the Russian Federation will be vindictive if it suffers a complete defeat, or, as before, will pose a threat even if it achieves partial success.
“If we do not put an end to Russia’s attempts to recreate its empire at the expense of small states on its borders, it will simply continue: subversive activities, hybrid attacks, cyberattacks – all that we are currently observing. Therefore, it is important not to waste time on creating the necessary defense system,” Billström warned.
In a conversation with journalists, the former head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry noted that a full-scale Russian invasion of Europe is unlikely to happen in the near future. However, he is confident that the hybrid threat will still be present.
NATO was urged to prepare for a large-scale war with the Russian FederationEarlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the member states of the Alliance are “Russia’s next target”. According to him, NATO should make every effort to prevent a new war.
Rutte emphasized that many NATO members do not feel the urgency of the threat from the Russian Federation in Europe and do not understand that to prevent such a war, it is necessary to quickly increase defense and production spending.
