Ryabkov said that Russia will continue to defend its national interests.
“The risks are high and they’re growing, and that’s very worrying,” he said.
Ryabkov added that the current geopolitical tension was unheard of even at the height of the Cold War. He accused the West, particularly the United States, of lacking common sense and restraint.
“The West and the people who live there probably underestimate our determination to protect our main national security interests,” the deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
Ryabkov also commented on the decision of the US President Joe Biden’s administration to hand over a new $725 million aid package to Ukraine. He said in a conversation with journalists that “you can’t put pressure on Moscow indefinitely.”
“There will come a time when we will have no choice but to resort to even stronger military means,” he added.
The journalists recalled that Russia threatened to strike Ukraine again with the Oreshnik ballistic missile. Ryabkov clarified that this is allegedly not a strategic ballistic missile, but a medium-range missile.
According to the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the decision of the then US President Donald Trump in 2019 to withdraw Washington from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles opened the way for Moscow to develop a new ballistic arsenal:
“If it weren’t for Trump’s decision, we wouldn’t have Oreshnik in our hands, and we would be limited in our ability to develop such a weapon.”
Ryabkov clarified that the Russian Federation had no direct contact with Trump or his team regarding statements about “ending the war in Ukraine in one day.”
The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation emphasized that Russia and the United States have completely different views on the issue of peace negotiations.
“The chances of a compromise are currently zero. As soon as people in Kyiv begin to understand that Russia will not follow their proposed path, opportunities may appear,” Ryabkov summarized.
Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are important newsEarlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte suggested that Ukraine postpone any peace talks with the Russian Federation. According to him, Kyiv itself should decide when it will be ready to discuss the issue of a ceasefire with Moscow.
In addition, Foreign Affairs found out what guarantees Ukraine can receive before negotiations with Russia. The article talks about what exactly Kyiv can do in the process of negotiations.
