According to Frederiksen, the US president’s threats should be taken seriously.
The Prime Minister of Denmark predicts the collapse of NATO in the event of a US attack on Greenland / UNIAN collage, photo consilium.europa.eu, ua.depositphotos.comAn attack by the United States of America on the island of Greenland would mean the end of NATO. This statement was made by the Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, commenting on the statements of the American leader Donald Trump.
Bloomberg writes about it. In an interview with one of the Danish media, Frederiksen noted that Trump’s words that he “wants Greenland” should be taken seriously.
“But I also want to clearly state that if the USA decides to militarily attack another NATO country, it will be the end, including NATO and, accordingly, the security that was established after the end of the Second World War,” the politician emphasized.
The reporters added that Denmark is concerned about Trump’s insistence on establishing control over Greenland after the US raid in Venezuela that captured Nicolás Maduro. The US president has repeatedly stated that the US needs the island for its own security. And the other day, he even announced “terms for solving this situation”:
“We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months. We’ll talk about Greenland in 20 days.”
Mette Frederiksen called on Trump to stop such threats. And support for Greenland, which, by the way, is part of the Danish kingdom, was expressed by officials throughout Europe.
Trump’s encroachment on GreenlandFor the first time, Trump announced his plans for Greenland during his first presidential term, in 2019. His rhetoric has intensified since the Republican’s return to the White House. And in December, Danish intelligence for the first time called the USA a potential threat to its own security.
“For Europe and NATO, the stakes are extremely high. Military action in Greenland would undermine the foundations of the alliance, based on the principle of collective defense, according to which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. No NATO country has ever been at war with another member of the alliance, and the prospect of Washington using force against an ally could destabilize the entire Western security order,” the authors of the material emphasize.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, urged his compatriots not to panic, and called Trump’s rhetoric “disrespectful”.
Trump himself claims that control over Greenland is allegedly necessary for US national security. Notably, it is home to the northernmost US airbase and a radar station used for missile detection and space monitoring.
The head of the Danish government noted that her country “has always been a good ally of the United States” and she would like it to continue to be so.
“But we certainly will not accept and will not tolerate a situation in which we and Greenland face such danger. Greenland has very clearly stated that it wants to determine its own future. This future should not be determined by others,” Mette Frederiksen summed up.
Trump and Greenland: the latest newsThe other day, the United States conducted a high-profile operation in Venezuela, during which the head of the country, Nicolas Maduro, was detained together with his wife. Against the background of this event, Trump increased his rhetoric regarding Greenland, Cuba and Colombia. The American president’s team declares its intention to increase its influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Earlier, Trump’s adviser hinted at the annexation of Greenland after the operation in Venezuela. Kathy Miller provoked an international scandal by publishing a map of Greenland in the colors of the US flag.
