UNIAN collage / UNIAN photo, REUTERSCanadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested the deployment of Canadian troops in Ukraine, noting that such a possibility exists.
According to CTV News, Carney said that putting Canadian troops on the ground is only a “possibility” at this stage. He added that participating in a multinational force would have “a much greater effect than, obviously, if we were on our own.”
Carney said Canada’s initial contribution could start with training. Canadian soldiers are currently training Ukrainian troops in Poland as part of Operation Unifier.
The Canadian prime minister also said that his government’s efforts to build up military forces will help Canada play a role in ensuring Ukraine’s security after the war.
He added that General Jenny Carrigan, the Chief of the Canadian Defense General Staff, has been negotiating with his colleagues in the coalition for many months regarding the formation of security guarantees for Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that Carignan participated in a virtual meeting of the heads of defense departments of the coalition countries, scheduled a day before the summit of the leaders of the coalition of the willing.
Carney also met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who said he admires how Canada is stepping up support for Ukraine with equipment and financial aid.
Security guarantees for UkraineAs reported, yesterday at the meeting of the coalition of the willing, a draft statement was concluded on support for Ukraine in the event of a repeated attack by Russia. These obligations may include: use of military capabilities; intelligence and logistical support; diplomatic initiative; adoption of additional sanctions.
