Currently, the sanctions are not being applied adequately to force Russia to end the war.

According to the correspondent of UNIAN, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhiy Tyhiy, said this at a briefing.

“We welcome the strong position of US President Donald Trump on the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia. We believe that the pressure on the aggressor should increase, because if we want to force the aggressor to a just peace, there should be serious pressure on this aggressor,” Tykhi noted.

As the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes, Ukraine’s position remains unchanged: the stronger the pressure on Russia, the more likely the Russian Federation will strive for a just peace.

According to him, the potential of sanctions measures against the Russian economy is not fully applied.

He noted that last year’s sanctions against the Russian banking sector and the “shadow fleet” really hit the Russian military economy.

“And we believe that these steps can be strengthened,” Tykhy stressed.

The spokesperson also added that the Russian propaganda’s claim that the sanctions are allegedly not working is a lie.

“They are working! And we see that the Russian economy is facing some systemic problems. But in our view, at this point, those problems are not enough to actually make Putin choose peace over war. There is a lot of potential to strengthen these sanctions “, Tykhy emphasized.

According to him, sanctions against Russia should be strengthened simultaneously by America and Europe. Ukraine is waiting until the end of winter for a strong 16th package of sanctions from the European Union.

As Tykhy said, sanctions should be sectoral, not just personal. The priority sectors for the introduction of sanctions are the elimination of Russian liquefied gas from the market, the strengthening of measures against the oil “shadow fleet”, the further application of sanctions against the banking sector, metallurgy, nuclear energy, the IT sector, etc.

In addition, economic pressure on the Russian Federation should be combined with military pressure by strengthening the military potential of Ukraine.

In addition, the spokesman commented on the statement of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the parties should make compromises in the context of a peaceful settlement.

“Let’s wait for the official contacts of the Ukrainian and American sides. During these personal contacts, it will be possible to discuss all parameters, approaches and some key details,” Tykhy said.

At the same time, he announced the general position of Ukraine:

“The Ukrainian side and the new US administration of Donald Trump share one common goal – the achievement of a just peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”

He emphasized that Ukraine is more interested in restoring peace than anyone else.

“However, how to achieve this goal, with what methods, what steps, what specific parameters – this will be discussed at the negotiations. And we are waiting for these contacts, and of course, first of all, the meeting of the presidents of Ukraine and the USA. We believe that this meeting will complete all the dots over “and”. Let’s wait for it,” Tykhi noted.

Negotiations between the Russian Federation and UkraineAs UNIAN reported, US President Donald Trump threatened Russia with serious sanctions.

According to Trump, a full-scale war in Ukraine will become even worse for Russia. Moreover, if an agreement to end the war is not concluded in the near future, Trump will have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs and sanctions on everything that Russia sells to the US and other countries.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that in order to end the war, Ukraine and Russia must make concessions. According to him, Russia still has no chance of capturing all of Ukraine, just as Ukraine has no chance of returning the temporarily occupied territories.
