Europe should focus on itself, and not compare itself with others, says the head of the European Commission.
Ursula von der Leyen warned Trump against interfering in EU politics / UNIAN collage, photo ua.depositphotos.comThe President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, should not interfere in European democracy. Such a statement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
“When it comes to elections, it’s not us, it’s the people of this country who decide who will be its leader… This is the sovereignty of the voters, and it must be protected. No one else should interfere, without any doubt,” Politico quoted her as saying.
The statement came in response to a question about the National Security Strategy of the United States, which states that Europe will face “civilizational destruction” within the next 20 years. It is noted that this thesis was echoed by the far-right leaders of Europe, in particular the odious Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán, as well as in Russia.
In addition, the above-mentioned American document criticizes Europe’s efforts to limit the influence of far-right parties – they are called political censorship.
According to von der Leyen, this is one of the reasons why the EU proposed the “Shield of Democracy” project, which is designed to strengthen the fight against foreign interference on the Internet – particularly in the matter of elections. She noted that she always had a “very good working relationship” with American leaders, and still does today. However, Europe should focus on itself, and not compare itself with others, says the head of the European Commission.
“Deep down, I am a convinced transatlanticist. But what is so important? What is important is that… we are proud to be the European Union, that we see our strength and that we cope with the challenges before us. Of course, our relationship with the United States has changed. Why? Because we are changing. And it is very important to remember: what is our position? What is our strength? Let’s work on it. Let’s be proud of it. Let’s stand for a united Europe. our task… to look at ourselves and be proud of ourselves,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
Tension in relations between the USA and the European UnionIn recent days, US President Donald Trump has been criticizing European countries quite often. Recently, the former head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that the American leader has declared a diplomatic war on Europe. He urged Europe to “stop pretending that Trump is not our adversary.”
Moreover, Danish intelligence for the first time characterized the United States as a potential security threat. It was noted that the US increasingly prioritizes its own interests and “uses its economic and technological power as an instrument of power, including over allies and partners.”
