Georgia is plunged into an acute political crisis, in which different branches of government do not recognize each other, and there are thousands of protests on the streets.

President Salome Zurabishvili refused to resign when her term expires in mid-December. The corresponding statement was issued by the presidential press service.

“A national consensus was reached on the main issue – no one can take away Georgia’s independence, no one can return Georgia to Russia, no one can take away Georgia’s freedom and European future. This national consensus took place wherever it was possible, and every minute you can see that the national consensus is becoming stronger and stronger,” she said.

According to Zurabishvili, apart from the “national consensus” described above, the only legitimate institution in the country remains the president’s institution.

“There is no legitimate parliament, therefore an illegitimate parliament cannot elect a new president; therefore, there can be no inauguration, and my mandate continues until a parliament is legally elected that will legally elect someone in my place,” the president said.

Zurabishvili promised to become the center around which society and political parties will rally to “do this work” – to hold new parliamentary elections. According to her, a meeting devoted to solving this issue should be held tomorrow.

It is worth noting that according to the new constitution of Georgia in 2017, the president should not be elected by the people, but by a special electoral college, which consists of half of the members of the parliament and half of the representatives of the regions. Moreover, Salome Zurabishvili was the last president elected under the old system of popular vote.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Georgia Iraklii Kobakhidze said that the country’s authorities will not allow “the scenario of the Ukrainian Maidan”, reports the portal “Novosti Georgia”.

“Unlike Ukraine in 2013, Georgia is an independent state with strong institutions and, most importantly, experienced and wise people. The Maidan scenario cannot be implemented in Georgia. Georgia is a state and will not allow this,” Kobakhidze said at a briefing today.

The Prime Minister placed the responsibility for the street clashes on European politicians and the “agency”.

“The main responsibility for yesterday’s violent rally lies with the relevant European politicians and bureaucrats, the local agents, the fifth column, which is represented in the form of four political parties,” he said.

Political crisis in GeorgiaAs UNIAN wrote, at the end of October, parliamentary elections were held in Georgia, in which the pro-Russian party “Georgian Dream” won.

Opposition parties and the country’s president did not recognize the results of the vote, accusing the government of falsifications.

People’s protests on fresh tracks quickly subsided. However, the other day the government announced its intention to abandon plans for European integration. This caused new powerful protests by citizens, which resulted in clashes with the police.
