President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has decided on a candidate for the position of commissioner for the protection of the rights of servicemen and members of soldiers’ families, the decree on the appointment will be published on Monday, Zelenskyi said in an evening video message on December 29.

“I chose a candidate – a strong candidate. The decree will be published tomorrow. Together with the new commissioner, with the human rights community and the Ministry of Defense, we will agree on the relevant draft law on the military ombudsman, as well as the relevant systemic foundations of his activity: powers, finances and everything else. I ask the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the government to support the proposed innovations in a timely manner. We should soon start the work of the military ombudsman,” the country’s leader said.

Zelensky added that the military ombudsman institution will protect the rights of servicemen.

In April, the press service of the Ministry of Defense reported that the institution of a military ombudsman was introduced in Ukraine, which will be responsible for protecting the rights of servicemen and their family members. The corresponding decision was made on April 3 at the constituent meeting on the protection of the rights of military personnel.
