Vittorio Hösle warns that the further escalation of Russia’s war against Ukraine could cause the collapse of NATO and turn into a global conflict.
The political scientist who predicted the war in Ukraine made a forecast for NATO / photo 82 separate amphibious assault brigade BukovynaWhen Vittorio Hösle, a political thinker and director of the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, predicted in 2015 that Ukraine was at risk of a full-scale invasion by Russia, few believed him. Now he warns that further escalation of the war between Russia and Ukraine could lead to the collapse of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
According to BC Heights, in a speech at Boston College, Hösle emphasized that the inconsistency of US policy on the conflict creates dangerous uncertainty.
“If America leaves NATO, then NATO will fall apart,” he said, emphasizing that the current US President Donald Trump does not demonstrate a stable position regarding the principles of international security.
The analyst explains that the Russian-Ukrainian war has deep political roots associated with Russia’s post-Cold War humiliation and Vladimir Putin’s desire for revenge. He drew parallels between the political situation in Russia in the 1990s and that of Germany in the 1920s, noting that the combination of military defeat, concentration of power and mass mobilization could lead to large-scale conflict.
“There will be a huge revenge,” Hösle warns, emphasizing that the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 is Moscow’s response to a perceived humiliation.
He adds that Russia has faced strong resistance from Ukraine, international aid to Kyiv, and China’s reluctance to openly supply military equipment.
The political analyst warns that the war is in the early stages of a potentially larger international conflict, and believes it is naive to expect NATO to solve the problem on its own.
Hösle calls on the international community to take into account the deep political foundations of the conflict and prepare for possible large-scale consequences.
Will the US leave NATO?It will be recalled that during his presidency, Donald Trump repeatedly criticized NATO allies for insufficient defense spending. Before his re-election, he threatened to withdraw the United States from the Alliance if member states did not increase defense funding.
NATO Ex-Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, who headed the Alliance for 10 years, said that a difficult day during his tenure was July 12, 2018, when then US President Donald Trump considered withdrawing from NATO.
