The publication reminded that the former central banker won the election, so he became the 24th Prime Minister of Canada. In his first speech in the new position, Karney appealed to the Canadians and the United States, promising to protect the country’s sovereignty because of the growing tension in relations with the Presidential Administration Donald Trump.
“America is not Canada. And Canada never, will never be part of America in any way, in no way. We have not asked for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops gloves,” the new prime minister emphasized.
Newsweek noted that Carney’s leadership is in tense relations between the US and Canada, as Trump has introduced new duties on Canadian goods and repeatedly declared the US right to Canadian natural resources.
The publication also writes that recent Trump rhetoric and aggressive tariff policy alarm Canada, because the country understands that the US Presidential Administration is considering a neighboring state not as a sovereign ally, but as a subordinate economic partner.
“Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they succeed, they will destroy our lifestyle,” Carney added in his victorious speech.
In addition, the new Prime Minister has promised to defend the “language, culture and water of Canada”, which, he said, is the excessive admiration of Trump.
