Ukraine is expecting a meeting between US President-elect Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky after the inauguration on January 20, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhiy, commenting on reports of preparations for a meeting between Trump and Russian leader Volodymyr Putin.

“Donald Trump has previously spoken about plans for such a meeting (with Putin – ed.)so we do not see anything new in this. Our position is very simple: all of us in Ukraine want to end the war fairly for Ukraine, and we see that President Trump is also determined to end the war. Therefore, the most important thing now is that we are waiting for a meeting between our presidents: President Trump and President Zelensky,” Tykhi said at a briefing on January 10 in Kyiv.

According to the spokesman, the main thing for Ukraine is to work together with the USA for the sake of peace. “We are preparing for Ukrainian-American contacts at the highest and highest level right after the inauguration,” Tykhy added.

On January 9, the US president-elect announced that a meeting was being prepared between him and Putin, but did not name its dates.

“President Putin wants to meet. He even said it publicly, and we have to end this war,” Trump said.

Commenting on Trump’s statement, the Kremlin said that Putin is open to negotiations without any preconditions. However, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, there are no concrete plans for a meeting between Trump and Putin yet.

Progress in organizing the meeting is possible after Trump’s inauguration, scheduled for January 20, the Kremlin spokesman added.

During the election campaign, the newly elected president said that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. Trump said at a press conference that he hopes to end hostilities within six months.

“I hope much sooner than six months,” Trump said when asked if he could resolve the war within six months.

Trump’s return to the White House brings with it uncertainty about what impact it will have on the nearly three-year-old war and potential negotiations. But Trump said he was determined to “fix it,” adding that it was “hard.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.

Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
