The government will not help: the expert gave a disappointing forecast about the blackout schedules

Blackouts in Ukraine will persist even in the absence of shelling due to a lack of generation and distribution capacity.

This opinion was expressed by the expert on energy issues, chief researcher of the National Institute of Strategic Studies Gennadiy Ryabtsev on the air of “Hromadsky radio”.

According to him, after the government’s order to remove a number of non-critical consumers from the list of protected objects, which should have made it possible to release up to 1 GW of electricity for the population, “no one redistributed anything.”

“No one was able to find anything. Because it is difficult to redistribute something when there are no clear criteria. If the Cabinet of Ministers had previously established clear criteria by which critical infrastructure objects would be determined, in particular – the list of protected consumers, then it would be clear and understandable that there are redundant companies in the lists of protected consumers in certain regions, which could simply be crossed out and transferred to general grounds,” Ryabtsev explained.

According to him, the government did not do this, only received reports from the regions “about 800 megawatts, which for some reason have already become one gigawatt.”

“But if there is no additional energy, if new low-generation power plants are not put into operation, if there is no possibility to speed up repair work due to the presence of multiple damages on transmission and distribution lines, then where will this one gigawatt of electricity come from? Only, most likely, from the imagination of our Prime Minister,” said Ryabtsev.

The expert believes that the government makes such statements in order to reassure the population instead of explaining the real state of affairs. He noted that there are regions of Ukraine where the duration of blackouts is shorter for objective reasons – for example, more power lines or generation facilities and less consumption. However, for the majority of consumers, especially on the Left Bank and in the frontline regions, nothing has changed.

“And it will not change until a larger number of installations combined into small distribution systems and connected to the power system are put into operation,” the expert emphasized.

He added that power outages in Ukraine will continue even in the absence of shelling due to a lack of generation and distribution capacities, and in some regions, even transmission, because energy companies do not have time to restore objects damaged by Russian shelling due to a lack of scarce equipment.

Power outages in Ukraine – the latest news The day before, Prime Minister Yuliya Svyridenko announced that starting from December 24 in Ukraine, power outage schedules for the population should be eased. According to her, the government has set a task for everyone involved, without exception, to ensure by December 24 the unconditional implementation of the decision to redirect the freed energy resource (up to 1 GW), obtained as a result of the review of the list of critical infrastructure objects, for the needs of the population.

The director of energy programs of the Razumkov Center, Volodymyr Omelchenko, noted that the government’s decision will not significantly improve the situation. The expert suggests that government officials may seek additional kilowatts from Ukrainian businesses, but this will not significantly affect the situation.
