It is planned to increase safety and defense expenditures by UAH 449 billion.
According to Prime Minister Denis Shmigal during a government meeting, for the first 5 months of this year, the government allocated almost 1 trillion UAH for defense and security, which is 2/3 of everything expended from the state budget. Compared to the same period last year, 34% more money was allocated for the army and security.
“We send every hryvnia of taxpayers from the state budget to Ukraine’s defense capability. Our armed forces are all this time financed and fully financed,” the head of the government said.
According to Shmigal, it is proposed to increase the financing of the security and defense forces of Ukraine this year by UAH 412 billion. Of these, almost UAH 311 billion is provided for the Ministry of Defense.
More than UAH 100 billion is planned to be directed to strengthen the capabilities of the Ministry of Strategropprom, the National Guard, Border Service, the SBU, the Main Directorate of Intelligence. UAH 6.3 billion is planned to be sent to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, in particular for the development of defense innovations.
“In total, we plan to increase the expenditures of the general fund of the state budget by UAH 449 billion. The sources of coverage of these expenditures are an increase in budget revenues and an increase in internal borrowings,” Shmigal added.
Lack of funds for the needs of the armyIn May, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported that the state budget lacks from UAH 400 to 500 billion for military expenditures. He noted that after the IMF mission was completed, the government would be prompted to increase defense expenditures from the IMF’s mission.
In early June, Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko reported that the government would apply to the Parliament for reviewing the state budget to increase military expenditures. According to the minister, the reasons for the lack of funds include changing technologies, changing the supply of weapons from our partners and intensifying the situation on the battlefield.
