The following powers for the new ministry are envisaged:
- ensuring the formation and implementation of state policy on national unity of Ukraine and joint development; Ukrainian national consciousness; information policy of unity of Ukraine and strategic communications (in terms of powers on national unity of Ukraine);
- Formation and implementation of the state policy on the protection of the rights and interests of persons traveling abroad, in particular as a result of armed conflict. As well as creating conditions for their voluntary return to an abandoned place of residence or integration at a new place of residence in Ukraine;
- assistance in coordinating the Foreign Ministry to meet the national-cultural, educational and linguistic needs of persons who went abroad;
- Promoting the establishment of Ukrainian national identity and Ukrainian civic identity.
In addition, the government has approved the creation of a national unity agency that “will help implement initiatives on interaction with the Ukrainian community and public organizations in the countries of residence.”
The resolution also approved the abbreviated name of the Ministry of National Unity of Ukraine – the Ministry of Staff.
Viceremier-Minister of Ukraine-Minister of National Unity of Ukraine Oleksiy Chernyshov noted that the ministry is working on “that every citizen, wherever he is, feels part of a strong and united Ukraine.”
On December 3, 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a decision on the renaming of the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine to the Ministry of National Unity of Ukraine. Also on December 3, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Viceremier-Minister-Minister of National Unity of Ukraine Alexei Chernyshov.
