According to Georgescu, “the priority will definitely be that this war in Ukraine should be stopped immediately.”
According to him, Bucharest is not obliged to comply with NATO’s defense spending obligations and prioritizes national interests, questioning the effectiveness of EU funding.
The publication reminds that since Russia attacked Ukraine, Romania helped export millions of tons of Ukrainian grain through its Black Sea port of Constanta, trained Ukrainian fighter pilots and gave Kyiv a Patriot air defense battery.
“All this will stop if I win. How can I agree to this? It is impossible. Romania and the Romanian people come first. It is impossible to imagine a war in the middle of Europe next to us, so the priority will definitely be that this war in Ukraine it must be stopped immediately,” said the politician.
Asked if he supported NATO’s broken promise that each member state spend 2% of GDP annually on defense, a position held by US President-elect Donald Trump, which Georgescu admires, he said he was “not interested”:
“The concern of the Romanian people is to be happy. They cannot be happy by spending money on other things. If NATO takes a defensive position, it must remain defensive. I believe in one thing: Romania owes no one.”
