The President of the European Commission announced the creation of the EU security strategy / photo European UnionThe European Union is developing its own security strategy. This statement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Euractiv reports.
The political bloc seeks to increase the defense potential. During a closed session of the European Parliament, von der Leyen said that the EU would become a “military state”.
“We know we need to be strong, and strength is just that,” she explained.
The politician noted that now the EU is not a military power. However, the bloc is taking steps in this direction and already in 2026, it is expected that a new EU security strategy will be presented.
“This has never been done before, but now is the time,” added the President of the EC.
In recent months, the bloc has already increased its defense capabilities. In particular, we are talking about the ReArm program worth up to 800 billion euros and the SAFE joint procurement program, to which 19 EU countries have joined.
The countries of the world invest more money in defenseUkraine has been holding back Russian aggression for the fourth year. Defense requires a lot of money. The former head of the Ministry of Defense Denys Shmyhal reported that in 2026, Ukraine needs 120 billion dollars for defense. Part of these funds is expected from partners.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that the country should increase its military budget. In his opinion, Washington should increase it to 1.5 trillion dollars in 2027. The US defense budget for 2026 is about $1 trillion.
