“The European Parliament requires the EU to strengthen its surveillance capabilities, as well as conduct targeted inspections at sea”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org
In a resolution passed on Thursday, parliamentarians called for more targeted action against these vessels in the next EU sanctions package, including all individual vessels as well as their owners, operators, managers, accounts, banks and insurance companies.
The European Parliament also wants the EU to strengthen its surveillance capabilities, especially with the help of drones and satellites, as well as targeted inspections at sea.
MEPs want EU member states to designate ports capable of accepting sanctioned vessels carrying crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) and confiscate illegal cargoes without compensation.
In June 2024, the European Union approved the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which, among other things, provided for restrictions on Russian LNG. In particular, the EU authorities introduced a ban on its transit through European ports, and also banned the re-export of Russian gas.
From December 2022, the price ceiling for Russian oil established by Western countries will be in effect. After its introduction, Russia began to use the so-called “shadow fleet” for oil exports – old tankers that turn off beacons so that they are not seen by surveillance systems.
