The Czech Republic explained why the country continues to import oil and gas of Russian origin

Despite the fact that Prague has stopped direct purchases of Russian gas, the Czech Republic continues to import energy carriers of Russian origin on European markets, where it is technically difficult to trace the original source, says Tomasz Kopechny, the Czech government’s commissioner for the reconstruction of Ukraine, in an exclusive interview with Radio Svoboda.

“As for gas and oil, the fact is that when it comes to imports, we buy from the European market. We do not buy directly from Rosneft or any other Russian company, and no Czech companies buy it from them. They buy it on the energy market in Europe. But this is the fact that allows Russian companies to successfully sell their oil and gas to the Czech Republic and at the same time not violate the sanctions regime,” said Kopechny.

He explained that sometimes it is almost impossible to trace a country that produces fossil fuels: “They sell energy through other partners. After all, it’s not as easy to track as a weapon that has its own identifier to prevent its proliferation.”

Earlier it became known that the Czech Republic spent more than seven billion euros on Russian oil and gas. This is more than five times the amount of 1.29 billion euros it gave to Ukraine in military aid, according to the Bulgaria-based Center for the Study of Democracy.

After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union did not adopt sanctions that include an embargo on Russian gas. At the same time, Russia stopped supplies to many EU countries, and some of them refused Russian gas. Also, the USA and European countries regularly introduce sanctions that prohibit or limit cooperation with Russian companies.
