Crimea today – what is knownIn February 2014, Russia annexed Crimea and illegally annexed it to the Russian Federation.
Russia introduced its troops without identification marks (“little green men”) into the territory of the peninsula, took control of strategic objects and organized a pseudo-referendum on March 16, 2014, which was not recognized by Ukraine and most of the world. The formal basis for the annexation was the “will” of the Crimean population, but international law interprets this as a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The annexation of Crimea caused international sanctions against Russia and a significant worsening of relations between Russia and the West. The UN and most countries of the world continue to recognize Crimea as part of Ukraine.
