The Association of Cities called on the President of Ukraine to stop pressure on local self-government / UNIAN photoThe leaders of the communities of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called to protect the rights of citizens to local self-government, democracy and justice in the Address of the Board of the Association of Cities of Ukraine.The Association of Cities of Ukraine cites examples of pressure on the heads of small communities as early as January 2025 and notes previous appeals about violations of legislation, procedures and justice in the conduct of procedural actions by law enforcement and judicial bodies against representatives of local self-government.
“Systemic pressure on local self-government weakens communities and Ukraine as a whole, and therefore leads to a weakening of the country in the war with the aggressor, makes the path to our Victory more difficult. Local self-government is the basis of democracy and an important part of protecting the independence of Ukraine during a full-scale invasion, strong local self-government we are different from Putin’s Russia. Mayors are being detained, in particular, about violations of legislation, procedures and justice during procedural actions by law enforcement and judicial bodies against the heads of small communities already in 2025. Oleksandr Suprunyuk, the head of the Netishyn city council, on the initiative of the Shepetiv district police department in Khmelnytskyi region, is suspended from duty for 60 days with house arrest for the municipality’s purchase of drones for military units.
On the initiative of the Drogobytsky district TCC, the head of the Drohobytsk city council, Taras Kuchma, was forcibly taken away with the use of police forces because of the celebration of the Day of Sobornosty in the community.
The head of the Irpin City Council, Oleksandr Markushin, is arrested for 60 days or offered to pay 30 million hryvnias as bail for the legal departure of a single father whose two-year-old son’s mother died. This is only part of the cases of the first”, – stated in the Appeal.
