The relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has become increasingly strained due to differing views on foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran and the Chagos Islands.
Sources indicate that during a private dinner, Trump referred to Starmer as a “loser,” a marked shift from his previous praise for the British leader, whom he had once called a “winner.” This change in tone reflects a growing discontent with Starmer’s leadership.
“Trump began calling Starmer a loser. He said this at a dinner with friends. He simply believes that Starmer has no future,” a source reported.
A key point of contention arose when the UK government declined to grant permission for the use of the Diego Garcia base for potential strikes against Iran. Trump publicly criticized Starmer, contrasting him unfavorably with Winston Churchill.
“We are not dealing with Winston Churchill,” Trump stated, adding that Starmer was “ruining relationships.”
The White House’s rhetoric has shifted notably, as Trump has also expressed disapproval of Starmer’s domestic policies. He described the UK’s immigration and energy strategies as “terrible.” Just months earlier, Trump had complimented Starmer’s “great accent” and acknowledged him as a “very tough negotiator.”
The situation escalated further after Starmer agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius, a decision Trump labeled as “very woke” and claimed it created unnecessary logistical challenges for U.S. military operations.
Tensions between President Trump and Prime Minister Starmer have escalated due to disagreements over foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran and the Chagos Islands. Trump's recent derogatory remarks signal a significant shift in their previously cordial relationship.
