Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiga visited the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, where he met with Director General Rafael Grossi – he announced this on November 20.

Sybiga said that he discussed with Grossi the presence of the agency’s missions at the nuclear facilities of Ukraine.

“I emphasized that increasing the presence of IAEA missions at our nuclear facilities is a necessary response to systematic threats to nuclear safety from Russia,” he said.

Grossi said that the presence of IAEA experts at five nuclear power plants of Ukraine “remains vitally necessary”:

“He welcomed the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybigu to the Agency; reaffirmed our commitment to nuclear safety and security, as well as expanded efforts to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, as agreed with President Zelenskyi.”

A permanent monitoring group has been working at the Zaporizhia NPP occupied by the Russian military since September 2022.

At the same time, permanent monitoring missions of the IAEA began their activities at the Chernobyl, Rivne, South Ukrainian and Khmelnytsky nuclear plants in January 2023.

The IAEA reported on November 17 that Ukraine’s nuclear power plants had reduced electricity production after the massive Russian strike: only two of the country’s nine operating reactors were producing electricity at 100% capacity.
