“Targeted attacks on the objects of critical infrastructure of Ukraine have catastrophic consequences. More than half of the country’s energy production was affected, millions of people were left without proper supply of electricity, heat, and water,” the message states.
It is noted that experts from the Swiss Bureau of Humanitarian Aid (SHA) are also working in Kyiv, helping to repair and restore damaged heat pumps, power plants and generators.
“Special attention is paid to vulnerable population groups, including internally displaced persons and people living near the front line or in remote areas. Switzerland is distributing heating equipment and winter clothing, as well as repairing and insulating damaged houses,” the Federal Council said.
Over the past two years, the government says, Switzerland has allocated a total of 84.5 million Swiss francs (91 million euros) to help Ukraine during the winter period.
Switzerland has historically maintained neutrality. After the start of the war in Ukraine, it repeatedly refused other European countries when they asked to allow the transfer of Swiss-made weapons and ammunition to Kyiv.
According to the Ministry of Energy, since October 2022, Russia has carried out more than a thousand strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities, this year alone 9 GW of generating capacity was lost due to strikes.
