Slovak Prime Minister Faces Criminal Investigation for Alleged Treason

Slovak authorities have initiated a criminal investigation against Prime Minister Robert Fico on suspicions of treason and other serious offenses. This action follows a formal complaint lodged by the SaS party, which has garnered significant public support.

The case has been transferred from the General Prosecutor’s Office to the police for further inquiry. Opposition leaders have accused Fico not only of treason but also of abuse of power, crimes against humanity, and even links to terrorism.

Branislav Grohling, the leader of the SaS party, expressed approval of the investigation’s commencement. He stated, “I am convinced that Fico is suspected of committing serious crimes, so I appreciate that both the prosecutor’s office and the police are acting on this matter and are not remaining silent about it.”

The criminal complaint is rooted in Fico’s actions concerning energy security, particularly his initiatives to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. Grohling noted that the case has gained prominence due to unprecedented public backing, with over 13,000 individuals joining the complaint, making it the largest criminal submission in Slovak history.

Relations between Bratislava and Kyiv have recently soured over energy and financial issues. On March 19, Fico expressed frustration during a European Council summit, stating that discussions focused heavily on Ukraine, yet no progress was made regarding the resumption of Russian oil supplies through Ukrainian territory.

On March 21, Fico adopted a more aggressive stance towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and EU leadership, asserting that Slovakia would not be misled and warning that it might block further loans to Ukraine if the oil transit issue remained unresolved in favor of Bratislava.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is under criminal investigation for alleged treason and other serious offenses, following a complaint supported by thousands. The case highlights rising tensions between Slovakia and Ukraine over energy security issues.
