Russia is mercilessly destroying the energy sector: the government spoke about Ukraine's urgent needsThe Russian Federation damaged about 8.5 gigawatts of Ukraine’s generation / UNIAN collage, photo by DTEKEmergency needs of the energy system of Ukraine exceed 1 billion dollars. This was announced by Economy Minister Oleksiy Sobolev at a panel discussion in Davos.

According to the minister, among the main needs now are equipment – transformers, mobile substations, network equipment, cables and backup power sources. He emphasizes that the key factor is the speed of delivery of the necessary equipment.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the Russian occupiers damaged about 8.5 gigawatts of Ukraine’s generation with large-scale shelling only since October 25, 2025. We are talking about thermal power plants, thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants, a significant part of which were attacked again after their restoration by energy workers.

Damage to the power generation against the background of a significant drop in temperature provoked large-scale blackouts in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv, as well as the lack of heat and water supply for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.

Currently, the capacity deficit is partially covered by the import of electricity from the European Union. It is about 1.9 gigawatts, which became a record figure.

Sobolev added that Russia destroyed half of Ukraine’s gas production capacity last spring. In half a year, they were restored to 110%, but in autumn, as a result of the attacks, about 40% was destroyed. Ukraine has accumulated 13.2 billion cubic meters of gas in storage, but by the end of the heating season, it will be necessary to import more than 4 billion cubic meters.

Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy system are the latest newsAs a result of the occupiers’ attack on the capital on the night of January 20, 5,635 residential buildings in Kyiv were left without heating. Of them, 80% had already experienced a similar situation after the previous enemy attack on January 9.

At the same time, the energy expert of the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, Stanislav Ignatiev, said that during the attack, the Russians targeted TPP-5 and TPP-6 in the capital, as well as Ukrenergo substations. As a result, power outages in Kyiv can last up to 20 hours a day.
