Journalists note that the growth of their audience occurred after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Journalists divided pro-Russian channels in Germany into three groups / ua.depositphotos.comRussia controls more than half of the political content in Germany’s Telegram channels, the Telegram channel Deutsche Welle Glavnoe reports.
According to the analysis of The Insider and Novaya Gazeta – Evropa, pro-Russian content is created by Telegram channels that are part of the RT network. It is noted that the growth of their audience took place after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The article claims that the administrators of a number of these channels are related to subdivisions of Russia’s Central Military Intelligence Directorate (GRU). They also engage in disinformation.
It is claimed that in total, journalists noticed approximately 330 channels in German Telegram that regularly broadcast pro-Kremlin statements. About a third of them are devoted to non-political topics.
The publication shared that only a few of them are oriented towards the Russian-speaking diaspora, but the vast majority are fully German-speaking and work in the German political and social context.
According to data, pro-Kremlin publics account for 49% of the German audience in the “News and media” and “Politics” categories of the Telegram-statistics Telemetr aggregator.
Journalists divided pro-Russian channels in Germany into three groups. The first is a radical “combat wing” that openly broadcasts the Kremlin’s agenda. Quite often they are connected with state structures or Russian mass media.
The second group operates more subtly and promotes the same narratives in the form of “analyses” and “exposes”, while avoiding direct associations with Russian state media.
The third group is the most massive. These are conspiracy and right-wing radical channels, where pro-Russian arguments are mixed with the internal agenda of the Federal Republic of Germany.
According to the publication, Telegram is far from the most popular messenger in Germany. In particular, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are used by tens of millions of Germans, while Telegram is used by only a few million.
