Russia and Iran Discuss U.S. Role in Regional De-escalation

In a recent conversation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the need for the United States to abandon ultimatums and return to negotiations to help de-escalate ongoing conflicts in the region. This discussion took place on April 5, during an urgent phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

The primary focus of their dialogue was the escalating war that is increasingly affecting the region. Lavrov placed the responsibility for achieving a peaceful resolution squarely on the shoulders of the U.S.

The Russian Foreign Ministry articulated that the U.S. must contribute to stabilizing the situation by adhering to two key conditions:

  • Cease Pressure: The U.S. should completely abandon its use of ultimatums in discussions with Iran and other regional players.

  • Change Format: The situation should be redirected exclusively towards diplomatic negotiations.

Lavrov and Araghchi also paid special attention to the workings of the United Nations Security Council. Both ministers expressed concerns regarding potential resolutions that might be initiated by Western countries.

They urged against any actions on the international stage that could undermine the remaining chances for a political resolution to the crisis. Essentially, Moscow and Tehran are attempting to block any harsh resolutions or sanctions that may be proposed in response to recent attacks involving Iranian drones.

This conversation highlights Russia’s role as a key advocate for Iran in international affairs. The call for U.S. action reflects the Kremlin’s efforts to take the initiative in the diplomatic process while seeking to shield its ally from direct repercussions and international isolation.

It is worth noting that former President Trump had previously set a specific timeline for Iran regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Should Iran fail to comply, he threatened military action against its power plants.

The recent dialogue between Russia and Iran underscores Moscow's advocacy for Tehran in the face of U.S. pressure. Lavrov's call for the U.S. to engage in negotiations rather than ultimatums reflects a strategic effort to stabilize the region and protect Iranian interests.
