According to the official, only Denmark and Greenland can decide their future.
Antonio Costa also reacted to Trump’s words regarding the introduction of tariffs for Europe / UNIAN photoEuropean Council President Antonio Costa said US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs and take control of Greenland threaten the security and prosperity of the continent. He said this today, January 21, in the European Parliament, reports The Hill.
“The geopolitical challenges facing Europe sometimes seem depressing: Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, the undermining of the international legal order, doubts about the main alliances, but the European Union will emerge from this stronger, more stable and sovereign. For this to happen, our response must have three components: a Europe of principles, a Europe of protection and a Europe of prosperity. All these three components are currently being tested within the framework of transatlantic relations,” the politician assured.
Košta emphasized that he decided to convene an extraordinary summit of the leaders of 27 EU countries on Thursday to discuss these challenges.
The President of the European Council also stated that the EU will not retreat from the protection of Greenland, opposition to new tariffs and commitment to the NATO alliance.
“First, we are united by the principles of international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Second, we are united by full support and solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. Only they, Denmark and Greenland, can decide their future,” Kosta noted.
He said European leaders also agreed that “further tariffs would undermine the transatlantic relationship and the EU-US agreement”, which was struck last July but whose fate was in doubt after Trump threatened to impose tariffs.
The politician added that EU members agree that “there is a common transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, particularly through NATO,” but he emphasized that European countries “are ready to protect themselves, their member states, their citizens, their companies from any form of coercion.”
“And the European Union has the power and tools for this,” he assured.
Costa also said that European leaders want to “continue constructive interaction with the United States, of course, on all issues of common interest, and there are many of them, because we are partners and allies and belong to the transatlantic community.”
Trump’s policy on Europe – the latest newsEarlier, the American president justified the US “rights” to Greenland. He believes that no country will be able to ensure the security of Greenland, except for the United States.
“We are a powerful country, much more powerful than you can imagine. This was clearly visible in Venezuela two weeks ago. We saw it in the Second World War, when Denmark surrendered to Germany, they fought for only 6 hours and could not defend themselves or Greenland,” said Trump.
The American leader also said that he had done more for NATO than any other person. He is confident that his country will come to NATO’s aid if necessary.
“I have done more for NATO than any other person, living or dead. I think that in most cases they will confirm this to you. You can ask the Secretary General (Mark Rutte, editor’s note) about it. He also said so,” the politician added.
