This was stated by President of Finland Alexander Stubb, speaking at the plenary meeting “Support Ukraine” with the participation of European leaders in Kiev.
“Putin has lost this war. We will see Ukraine in NATO, in NATO. And we will see the United European Union and hope that there will be a more powerful stronger transatlantic alliance in the future. It is time to pave the way for the Ukrainian Victory Plan,” he said. He noted that it would be necessary to “accept peace with Putin”, which will be based on the independence of Ukraine.
Stubb stressed that Russia’s war against Ukraine has been 11 years, that is, since 2014, when Russia has annexed Crimea. According to him, this war concerns not only Ukraine but also Europe, the United States, because it is about order around the world.
“If we now allow Russia to do what it wants to do – to stop the existence of the Ukrainian state, then not only Ukraine but also Europe, the USA, loses,” the President of Finland said.
According to him, Putin cannot be trusted. “If Russia gets what he wants now, then, believe me, it will not stop in Ukraine. We know that Putin will continue to move forward, because he has an imperial vision,” Stubb said.
He noted that today everyone seemed to be a little lost, because after the change of the US administration, many “conflict statements” were heard. According to him, Europe has to regain the initiative, and there should be specific proposals on the negotiation tables.
Stubb proposed his vision of the negotiation process, which can have three phases, the first of which concerns the period to stop the fire – it should be pressed as much as possible on the Russian Federation, including sanctions, the use of frozen assets of Russia and the continuation of military support of Ukraine. According to him, leadership should be behind Ukraine, which should receive support from Europe and the US. “All this must be settled to the ceasefire – whether we do not know before the Passover,” he said.
According to him, the second phase is the ceasefire, where it is necessary to determine the line of demarcation, to monitor different processes. During it, the exchange of prisoners should be exchanged, the return of Ukrainian children.
He added that only after that the 3 phase will begin, which is still very far from us – during it you can talk about the territory, about the possibility of removing sanctions.
Speaking about the prospects of Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO, Stubb noted that not Russia would resolve this issue. “Not Russia decides who will be a member of the EU, but Europe. Secondly, NATO. Not Russia decides who will be a NATO member, but the Alliance. On the third, the protection of Ukraine. It does not decide that Ukraine will have on borders and when. And the fourth – and fourth – Order of safety for Europe.
