Polish families need a dignified burial for their loved ones, the Polish Prime Minister emphasized.
“We find a common language and ways of joint actions, especially when it comes to the Volyn tragedy. And also all sensitive issues in our history require empathy on the part of Ukraine, and also on the part of Poland in relation to Ukraine,” Tusk said.
In his opinion, these should be parallel processes.
“I will not allow this dramatic story to be used in Poland for the purpose of political games. We will work very consistently for a quick and systematic [розв’язання] this problem. And thank you for understanding. It took several years. Sometimes it disappears in political discussions, but there is this obvious problem and need of Polish families, which must be solved in order to decently bury their loved ones who were victims of the Volyn tragedy,” Tusk emphasized.
The Polish Prime Minister added that this principle should apply to all parties, that “we understand in this matter, that we are starting to speak in a normal language and have made a decision.”
Ukraine lifted the moratorium on the exhumation of the victims of the Volyn tragedyAs UNIAN reported, exhumation work at the burial sites of the Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy will begin in the spring. Exhumation work has not been carried out for many years due to the dispute between Kyiv and Warsaw, which has been going on since 2017. Then Ukraine imposed a moratorium on the relevant works due to the demolition of the monument to the UPA soldiers in the Polish village of Hrushovichi.
Finally, in late 2024, the foreign ministers of the two countries managed to find common ground on the issue and the moratorium was lifted.
