In an interview with Financial Times, Duda said he had recently discussed this proposal with Kit Kelloga, a special US messenger on Ukraine.
“NATO borders moved to the east in 1999, so 26 years later, NATO infrastructure should also be shifted to the east. It is obvious to me. I think it is not only that time has come, but also that it would be safer if these weapons were already here,” he said.
According to FT, earlier the communist regime of Poland housed Soviet nuclear warheads during the Cold War. At the same time, storage of such weapons near Russian borders – this time under the control of the United States – will be considered by the Kremlin as a serious threat.
Duda said that US President Donald Trump should decide where to place the US nuclear weapons, but reminded that Russia has moved tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus.
“Russia did not even hesitate when it overturned its nuclear weapons to Belarus,” Duda said. “They did not ask anyone.”
Duda also repeated the words of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk that the country could, as an alternative to get the best protection against the idea of President Emmanuel Macron to extend the “nuclear umbrella” France to European allies.
However, he criticized the assumption that Poland could create its own nuclear arsenal. “To have your own nuclear potential, I think it takes decades,” the President said.
