In Ukraine, it is believed that such a step in Poland goes against the spirit of good neighborly relations between countries.

“On July 11, it will be a national day of memory of the Poles – the victims of the Genocide committed by the OUN and the UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic. In 1939-1946, Ukrainian nationalists in the organization of Ukrainian nationalists (OUN), the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and other Ukrainian nationalist (UPA). Ternopil, Stanislavsky, Lviv, Polissya Voivodeship) and present -day Lublin and Subcarpathian Voivodeships, committed a crime of genocide against the Polish population.
The Seimas explains that the apogee of this crime was July 1943, and “the symbolic date of the Hackatoma of the Poles at the hands of Ukrainian nationalists is on July 11, 1943, when the Poles were killed in about a hundred cities.”
“Martyrdom, because of belonging to the Polish nation, deserves it to be mentioned in the form of a day, which is celebrated annually by the Polish state, which will be honored to the victims,” the law quoted.
In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that they regard this decision of the Seimas of the Republic of Poland as a matter, contrary to the spirit of good neighborly relations between Ukraine and Poland.
The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that such unilateral steps do not contribute to the achievement of mutual understanding and reconciliation that our countries have been working on for a long time, in particular in the format of a common Ukrainian-Polish group on historical dialogue, which operates with the participation of ministries and institutions of national memory of the two countries.
The Ukrainian side notes that consistently advocates the scientific, impartial study of the complex pages of the common history of the two countries.
“We are convinced that the path to real reconciliation lies through dialogue, mutual respect and joint work of historians, not through political unilateral evaluations. We urge the Polish side to refrain from steps that can lead to increased tension in bilateral relations and undermine achievements, which is a constructive dialogue.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that it sees the “bias and political context” of the Seimas of the Republic of Poland. But despite this, he urges to continue to go by conducting search and exhumation works in the territory of Ukraine and Poland, respectively.
“Once again, we should not look for enemies among Ukrainians, and Ukrainians – among the Poles. The enemy in us is in common – Russia. For the sake of common force, freedom and security of our two friendly countries, we must jointly resolve problematic issues, not exacerbate them,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Volyn tragedy is the latest newsAs reported by UNIAN, the topic of the Volyn tragedy is discussed at the state level between Ukraine and Poland for a long time and is one of the most painful in the relations of our peoples. In Poland, this tragedy is given a lot of attention, which often leads to the emotional statements of public persons both Poland and Ukraine.
In particular, in 2023, the Polish Seimas approved a resolution on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Volyn tragedy, which is officially called “Volyn massacre” in Poland. The document that was approved unanimously, among other things, contains a call for “pleasure”.
“Polish -Ukrainian reconciliation, which has been built by representatives of both peoples for years, should also include the plea and perpetuation of the memory of the victims of World War II,” the Seimas said.
It is known that search and exhumation works in the Ukrainian territory in the search for victims of the Volyn tragedy have been restored. Thus, in the Ternopil region, in the old cemetery, now the non -existent village of Puzhniki is carried out with appropriate work with the involvement of experts from Poland. The Polish side stated that such a high level of examination has not yet been conducted.
At the same time, Polish President Andrzej Duda recently made a new statement about the Volyn tragedy. He suggested that most Ukrainians did not know about that conflict, because during the USSR this topic did not take place in schools. Therefore, in his opinion, Ukrainians “wonder when they are told about the crimes of Ukrainians against the Poles.”
It should also be recalled that in the presidential elections in Poland, the second round of which took place on June 1, Karol Navrotsky – a conservative historian who stands for traditional values, limiting EU influence and cautious policy on Ukraine’s accession to NATO. Responding to greetings from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, he wrote that he was waiting for the continuation of the partnership of our countries, based on mutual respect and understanding, and this “requires not only a good dialogue, but also the solution of ripe historical issues.”
