In an interview with Financial Times, Tsakhkna warned that blocking the restoration of EU sanctions would be a major financial blow for G7 and EU countries through multibillion -dollar loans in Kiev.
Last year, the EU and G7 used a profit derived from approximately 260 billion euros of frozen Russian assets around the world, to support Ukraine’s loan of 50 billion euros. If the assets are thawed, the EU and the US will be responsible for 20 billion euros of credit and the rest will lie on the shoulders of other G7 members.
“The problem is that these assets that guarantee this loan will disappear … If they are going to block this, the sanctions will be lifted. And the central bank’s assets will be transferred to Russia, [Володимиру] Putin as a reward. We can’t allow this, “said Tsakhkna Financial Times.
At the same time, Estonia is to ensure that the G7 countries confiscate Russian assets and do not leave them under sanctions. “It would be the most clear and understandable solution,” Tsakhkna said.
Some EU and G7 countries, in particular, Belgium, opposed such a step, arguing that it could violate international law and undermine the belief in the euro.
“Our position has not changed,” said FT Minister of Belgium’s budget Vincent van Petegem. “Confiscation is currently impossible because of all the risks that are related to it. And at the same time, it is better to keep these frozen assets as a lever during peace talks with Russia.”
Tsakhkna said that he understands the reluctance of Belgium to confiscate assets, adding that such a decision should be made by a collective group of states, ideally, including all G7.
Negotiations with Hungary should also continue, said Tsakhkna, indicating that Orban depends on the EU funds. “I know they have many problems with the economy,” he said.
He also rejected any ways of Russia to reach these assets as unrealistic:
“Of course, Russia would like to use its frozen assets to bargaining and agreements. But the fact that they do not have these assets, they are frozen in Europe.”
At the same time, he said, after all, what will happen with the continuation of sanctions and frozen assets depends on the peaceful negotiations held through the US.

The government clearly stated that they did not support the country’s accession to the European Union, but they allegedly want to know the opinion of Hungary citizens on this.
Meanwhile, the European Union continues to look for ways to impose sanctions against Russia without needing the support of all 27 Member States. Thanks to this decision, the EU could continue sanctions against the aggressor country, despite Hungary’s position on this issue.
