On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss continued support for Ukraine and coordination with partners to achieve a just peace, the press service of the Office of the President of Ukraine reported on January 21.

“The head of state thanked for helping Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. Germany is second in terms of the amount of support provided to our country. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Germany has transferred more than 37 billion euros in aid. Separately, the President noted the country’s leadership in strengthening Ukrainian air defense. Germany made a significant contribution to the rescue of Ukrainians and helped save thousands of lives,” the message reads.

It is stated that during the meeting, the politicians paid special attention to the continuation of support to Ukraine, in particular the further provision of air defense means, and the coordination of steps with all allies.

“This will help strengthen Ukrainian soldiers at the front, strengthen Ukraine’s position and bring a just and lasting peace closer,” the OP press service reported.

Zelenskyi also discussed the creation of “unity centers” in Berlin.

Earlier, the German publication Der Spiegel wrote that the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Burbok, and the Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, offered to allocate an additional three billion euros for urgent military aid to Ukraine, but the administration of Chancellor Olaf Scholz is blocking the initiative.

Later, Pistorius assured that “there is no blockade. We at the Ministry of Defense have prepared a new aid package for Ukraine. But the internal process of agreement in the government of the Federal Republic of Germany has not yet been completed.”

In December of last year, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal reported that Germany’s total aid to Ukraine amounted to 37 billion euros. This is the largest among all European countries.
