“One of Moscow’s biggest defeats”: Zelenskyi on the termination of transit of Russian gas

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi commented on the termination of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine from January 1.

He recalled that at the beginning of Vladimir Putin’s presidency, the volume of gas supplied to Europe through Ukraine exceeded 130 billion cubic meters.

“Today, the transit of Russian gas is 0. This is one of the biggest defeats for Moscow. The transformation of energy carriers into weapons and cynical energy blackmail of partners is what deprived Russia of the most attractive and geographically accessible market for Russia,” the president said.

He expressed the opinion that most European countries have successfully adapted to these changes, but called it a joint task to support Moldova during the energy transformation.

“Also, we have to withstand the hysteria of some European politicians who prefer mafia schemes with Moscow instead of transparent energy policy,” he said.

Zelensky expressed hope for an increase in the supply of American gas to Europe, in accordance with the statements of US President-elect Donald Trump.

In his opinion, the maximum number of offers from partners on the market will make it possible to lower prices:

“The more gas there is on the market from Europe’s real partners, the sooner the last negative consequences of European energy dependence on Russia will be overcome.”

Ukraine stopped the transportation of Russian natural gas through its territory on January 1 at 07:00 “in the interests of national security”.

The main European importers of Russian gas, Slovakia and Austria, have already secured alternative supply routes. Stopping transit through Ukraine, according to analysts, will deal the biggest blow to Moldova, but the overall impact on the gas market will be minimal.
