This is the first foreign visit of Gunnarsdóttir after being appointed as the head of the Foreign Ministry of Iceland. According to the Ukrainian agency, the parties discussed Iceland’s further support of the “peace formula” and “agreed on the need for further political and economic isolation of the aggressor, increasing the price of war for Russia.”

“We discussed further cooperation, including investments in the defense industry of Ukraine and the Grain From Ukraine program. I thank Iceland for its support,” Sibiga said.

Also, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the minister expressed his gratitude to Iceland for help in demining, training of the Ukrainian military and operational procurement of weapons, as well as for the contribution of more than 2 million euros to the production of Ukrainian weapons according to the “Danish model”.

As the department adds, Gunnarsdóttir declared Iceland’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine: “It is also about further financing of the humanitarian initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi “Grain from Ukraine”, within the framework of which Ukrainian food is supplied, in particular, to Syria.”

Torgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdóttir became the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024.
