Canada’s former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, may compete for the position of leader of the Liberal Party after incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, CBC News and the Canadian edition of the Globe and Mail write with reference to sources.
Sources expect Freeland to make an official announcement before US President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in on January 20.
Candidates must announce their candidacy by January 23. Voting for the new party chairman will take place on March 9.
If Freeland wins the internal party elections, she will become the new head of the Canadian government.
On January 6, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he was stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party. He will remain in the post of prime minister until a candidate is chosen to replace him.
