The Russians are gradually modernizing their drones, which are now a threat not only for Ukraine but also for the West.

Photo UA.depositphotos.com / Photo UA.depositphotos.comIn 2025, Russia began to launch much more drones than last year / Photo – UA.depositphotos.comAt the beginning of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia launched about 150-200 drones per month. It now produces and launches almost 5,000 drones a month. This is stated in the Foreign Policy analysis.

The publication reminded that on September 7, the Russians have caused the largest air strike in Ukraine since the beginning of a full -scale invasion. In just one night, the occupiers launched 860 Shahamed and rockets.

Two days later, about 19 Russian drones violated Poland’s airspace, forcing NATO to lift fighters into the sky to knock down enemy targets. A few days later, a similar invasion of Romania’s airspace occurred.

The publication believes that such incidents have become part of a broader trend, in which Moscow made cheap drum drones with the basis of its air campaign. Since the beginning of 2025, Russia has launched more than 33,000 Shahaned drones in Ukraine. During the same period of 2024, only 4800 drones were launched.

The publication pointed out that the launches of winged and ballistic missiles remained relatively stable. This change demonstrates the evolution of the Russian Federation strategy, which lies in high pressure on Ukraine’s air defense.

The analysis of the publication also states that the key to Moscow’s strategy with the use of low -cost drones is their scalability. They are produced at several enterprises in Russia, including plants in Alabuz and Izhevsk.

According to the publication, the Russians continue to receive electronic components for their drones from other countries, despite Western sanctions. To do this, Russia uses various illegal deliveries.

Moreover, the production capacity allowed Russia to gradually improve its drones and implement innovative solutions. In particular, the geranium-3 drone has a stated range of up to 2500 kilometers, which in theory will allow Moscow to strike in some parts of Central Europe.

For the event, the main problem is not even the difficulty of intercepting Russian drones, but the opportunity to knock them down with reasonable costs. For example, Poland needed to use their own and allied fighters, which is an unjustifiably expensive way to eliminate hostile drones.

The publication summarized that the main reason why Russia prefers the use of cheap shock drones is an attempt to demand Ukraine and suppress the moral spirit of Ukrainians.

Russian drones turn supplies for the Armed Forces on the front at nightmareEarlier in The Wall Street Journal wrote that in recent months Russia has begun to apply new methods to expand the radius of its impact drones and constant control over Ukrainian logistics. The enemy does his best to prevent people and cargoes from entering the front.

According to the newspaper, the Russian Federation can now threaten Ukrainian roads further from the front line than before. Fiber drone can now overcome more than 19 kilometers on the front line.
