Canada’s former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, has officially announced that she will run for Liberal Party leader after incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation. She wrote about this on her page on the X social network on January 17.

“I’m running to fight for Canada,” Freeland emphasized.

If Freeland wins the internal party elections, she will become the new head of the Canadian government.

Earlier, the Canadian mass media wrote about her intentions to run for office.

Candidates must announce their candidacy by January 23. Voting for the new party chairman will take place on March 9.

On January 6, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he was stepping down as leader of the Liberal Party. He will remain in the post of prime minister until a candidate is chosen to replace him.

The government crisis in Canada began at the end of last year. On December 16, the Minister of Finance of Canada Khrystia Freeland resigned. Her conflict with Trudeau escalated as a result of the controversy surrounding the possible introduction of tariffs by the United States of America. In addition, Trudeau has been under pressure from the New Democrats, a small opposition party that abandoned its unquestioning support for a Liberal government in early 2024.

Khrystia Freeland was born in the Canadian city of Peace River in the province of Alberta. Her mother, Halyna Khomyak-Freeland, is Ukrainian by origin.
