He was 100 years old at the time of his death, making him the oldest former US president of all time, according to The Washington Post.

His son confirmed the death but did not give an immediate cause. In a statement in February 2023, the Carter Center said that the former president, after a series of hospitalizations, would stop further treatment and spend the rest of his time at home in hospice care. In recent years, he has been treated for an aggressive form of skin cancer, melanoma, with tumors that have spread to his liver and brain.

His wife, Rosalynn, died last November at the age of 96. It was at her funeral that Jimmy Carter last appeared in public. The last known photo of the 39th US president was taken on October 1 this year, when he celebrated his 100th birthday.

What is Jimmy Carter famous for?Carter managed to hold on to the presidency for only one term and lost the 1980 election to the famous Ronald Reagan.

When Carter left the White House, he was considered almost the biggest failed president of the 20th century. After all, many economic problems fell on his tenure: the global fuel crisis and unprecedented inflation for America. It was also during his time that the largest accident at a nuclear power plant in the history of the United States took place – the famous “Three Mile Island Incident”.

In 1979, an Islamic revolution took place in Iran, which was one of the important partners of the USA in Asia, and the new government took the staff of the American embassy in Tehran hostage. The attempt to forcibly release the hostages failed miserably, and it was another powerful blow to Carter’s reputation.

The icing on the cake of the Carter administration was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which was also listed among the failures of the Carter administration.

However, over time, some of Carter’s important merits were recognized. In particular, it was through his active mediation that the famous Camp David Agreements of 1979 were concluded, which ensured peace between Israel and Egypt to this day. Before that, these countries managed to conduct several full-scale wars. Much later, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this achievement.

Also, it was Carter who ensured the resolution of the long-standing dispute between the United States and Panama regarding the ownership of the Panama Canal. The same one that Donald Trump now wants to bring back under US control.
