Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has dismissed media reports suggesting she backed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s position on blocking a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. Meloni emphasized that a resolution is possible through mutual concessions from both parties.
During a recent European Council meeting, discussions primarily focused on urging Hungary to unblock the financial assistance for Ukraine. Meloni described interpretations of her earlier comments as “strange,” asserting that she does not support Orban’s stance.
“I believe the situation can be resolved. Flexibility from both sides is essential. On one hand, the resumption of the Druzhba oil pipeline is necessary, and on the other, the €90 billion will be automatically unlocked,” Meloni stated.
Earlier reports indicated that Meloni shocked EU leaders during a closed session of the summit by expressing understanding for Orban’s actions, which she reportedly justified by noting that he is facing upcoming elections. “If I were in the same situation, I would understand it,” she remarked.
