The Iberian country was swept by the same wave of antimine sentiment, which previously caused the lifting of far -right parties in other European countries.

Thus, on Monday, the Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Antonio Leitao Amaro said that the minimum term of legal stay in the country, after which the foreigner will be able to claim Portuguese citizenship, will be doubled – from 5 to 10 years. They will also strengthen the rest of the requirements that the applicants should meet. However, it will be possible to deprive the acquired citizenship for serious crimes.
According to the minister, the 10-year period will be applied to most foreigners, but for immigrants from the former Portuguese colonies, such as Brazil, Angola or Mozambick, a concession has been made: they have enough to live in Portugal for 7 years to claim citizenship.
According to the current rules, in order to apply for Portugal’s citizenship, foreigners must not only legally live there for five years, but also have to speak Portuguese at a sufficient level, not have convictions for considerable imprisonment during their lives and do not pose a threat to national security.
According to Reuters, in recent years, Portugal has accepted many immigrants, so strengthening the requirements for obtaining Portuguese citizenship was the central theme in the parliamentary elections that took place in May.
According to the AIMA migration and asylum, as of the end of 2024, with a total population of 10.5 million people in Portugal, more than 1.5 million foreign nationals lived. Among them, the Brazilians are the largest group – more than 450 thousand.

We also told that most Ukrainian refugees would not be returned to Ukraine. This is especially true for those who left the whole family, as well as those who settled well in the new country.
