Americans complain that the Trump administration is becoming increasingly militarized and authoritarian.

According to the publication, in total, more than 2,500 events are planned, which are expected to gather millions of participants.

Organizers of the rallies say the need for mass action is ripe as the Trump administration becomes increasingly militarized and authoritarian. In particular, they point to large-scale raids and deployment of troops in states led by Democrats.

During protests, people hold the slogans “No to kings”, “People instead of billionaires”. They also chant slogans into megaphones: “This is what democracy looks like”, “No hatred, no fear – immigrants are welcome here.”

One of the participants of the “No to Kings” march in New York told the publication that she has been protesting since the 1960s, but this time, she says, the feelings are different.

“In the 1960s, we wanted to expand rights – women’s rights, gay rights, minority rights, voting rights. But now all of this is being taken away from us. Now our entire democracy, basic principles, press, and judicial system are under threat,” the woman said.

Another protester, the article says, was holding a placard saying, “We’re protesting because we love America and want it back.” She described her feelings as “feelings of great sadness, loss and fear” during the Trump administration.

“I hope that together we can all save democracy,” she said.

The publication reminded that the protests are also taking place against the background of the shutdown in the US, when Republican lawmakers and the White House are facing off with Democrats over the government funding bill.

This happened because Congress did not have time to pass a government funding bill before the start of the new fiscal year. Republicans and Democrats have been unable to agree, in particular, on health insurance subsidies.

Defense Express experts, analyzing how long a shutdown can last in the US, said that since 1976, when it became possible due to changes in the law, there have been 27 shutdowns, and only 3 of them were “full”. The current one is also “full”. At the same time, they noted, the duration of such “shutdowns” is not regulated in any way. The longest “total shutdown” was from October 1 to October 17, 2013, during the presidency of Barack Obama due to the Affordable Care Act. According to approximate estimates, this cost the budget 2-2.5 billion dollars and up to 6 billion dollars in economic losses, experts recalled.

On October 7, it became clear that the US shutdown would continue, as the Senate did not vote to fund the government. It was noted that the legislators failed to advance either the proposals of the Democrats or the Republicans. The main stumbling block was Obamacare – the Affordable Health Care Act. Democrats want an extension of the expanded tax credit for insurance premiums, while the Republican Party says the issue should be delayed until the end of the year.
