The Belarusian Central Election Commission registered a total of five candidates, Radio Svoboda reports.

In addition to Oleksandr Lukashenka, who has held power in the country for over 30 years, the following names will also appear on the ballots:

  • Oleg Haidukevych is the son of the famous Belarusian politician Serhiy Haidukevych, who ran for president three times, the last time in 2015. Both father and son are generally loyal to Lukashenka’s regime, were elected deputies, and worked in positions related to the government. In 2020, Oleg Haidukevich condemned the actions of the protesters, accused the US and the EU of attempting a coup d’état.
  • Anna Kanapatska is the daughter of Anatoly Trukhanovich, the first official dollar millionaire in Belarus. In 2016, she was elected to the parliament as an opposition candidate. In the past, she was a member of the opposition UHP party, which is now liquidated. Opposes the orientation of Belarus towards Russia. Took part in the 2020 presidential elections. Despite the defeat of the Belarusian opposition in 2020-2021, she remained at large and now criticizes all pro-democratic forces, including Svitlana Tikhanovskaya.
  • Oleksandr Khizhnyak – worked as a lawyer in a number of state enterprises and organizations, heads the pro-government Labor and Justice Party. Deputy of the Minsk City Council. In 2006 and 2015, Khizhnyak received awards from Lukashenka for “honest work and active participation in public life.”
  • Serhii Sirankov is a member of the parliament, from 2024 the leader of the pro-government Communist Party of Belarus. He openly supports Lukashenka and claims that the government’s course is “fully compatible with the program of the CPSU” regarding the construction of a “state for the people” in Belarus.

The situation in Belarus: the latest newsAs UNIAN wrote, from time to time Oleksandr Lukashenko scares Belarusians with the threat of war and suggests preparing for an enemy attack. Traditionally, the threat to him comes either from Poland, or from Ukraine.

We also talked about why Lukashenko would not risk going to war with Ukraine. Despite direct cooperation with the aggressor country, Belarus has so far avoided direct participation in the war, and this is not accidental.
