“I am waiting for the extension of sanctions” of the European Union against Russia – Kallas

On January 27, EU countries will most likely decide to extend the current sanctions against Russia, said Kaya Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

“We will have a discussion about Ukraine. I am waiting for a decision on the extension of sanctions,” said Callas before a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barro, said that the decision should be agreed on January 27.

At the end of last week, on January 24, Hungary disagreed with the decision to extend sanctions against Moscow. If the EU does not have time to agree on a decision by January 31, the legality of freezing Russian sovereign assets will be questioned.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán continued to block sanctions, demanding that the EU pressure Ukraine to continue the transit of Russian gas through its territory, which has been suspended since January 1, 2025.
