Palestinian movements have agreed to transfer power in Gaza to independent technocrats.
Control over the Gaza Strip is handed over to the “government of technocrats” / photo ua.depositphotos.comPalestinian political movements have agreed to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to an independent Committee of Technocrats. This was reported in a joint statement of Palestinian organizations following the meeting in Cairo on October 24, the Times of Israel reports.
The committee will be made up of Palestinians and will take over the leadership of key services with the support of Arab countries and international organizations, “on the basis of transparency and accountability.” Different factions will work on a common position to solve the problems of the Palestinian cause.
Representatives of Hamas and “Islamic Jihad” were present at the meeting. The purpose of the event was to agree on a “national strategy” for the revival of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legal representative of the Palestinian people. At the same time, Hamas held separate negotiations with the leadership of Fatah regarding the second stage of the plan to end the war in Gaza, which involves the transfer of management to an independent body made up of Palestinian technocrats.
The statement also emphasizes the need for the continuation of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, support for the UN resolution on the deployment of international peacekeeping forces, the withdrawal of Israeli troops and ensuring the access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
However, the disarmament of Hamas and its exclusion from the political process were left out of the statement, emphasizing only the need for joint action by all Palestinian groups.
The situation in the Gaza StripWe will remind that the truce between Israel and Hamas was on the verge of collapse after the Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on the southern part of the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
The IDF said it was acting in response to “numerous attacks” by Hamas militants, including sniper and RPG attacks on Israeli forces east of the so-called Yellow Line, the boundary established under the ceasefire agreement.
As The Wall Street Journal writes, the US and Israel are considering a plan that would divide Gaza into separate zones controlled by Israel and Hamas, while rebuilding would be carried out only on the Israeli side as a temporary measure until the militant group is disarmed and removed from power.
