The government actually destroys the only body that is professionally responsible for water, said expert / photo pixabay.comEconomic expert Alexander Pendzin called An error attempt to eliminate the State Water Agency for the Government. In his opinion, such a step poses a threat to the economy, European integration processes and security of the country.
”Today, the government is trying to liquidate the State Agency for Water Resources and join it to another structure. This is formally presented as “optimization”, but in fact we are dealing with a step that can destroy the water management system of Ukraine. This solution is a gross mistake that will have far -reaching consequences”, – the expert said.
He stressed that the government actually destroys the only body that is professionally responsible for water – a critical resource for the economy and life of people.
”Davra manages strategic reservoirs, monitors water quality even in frontline territories, coordinates the work of thousands of kilometers of dams and channels, is responsible for the protection of hundreds of settlements from floods. These are not functions that can “smear” on different agencies without loss of control”, – explained the economist.
According to him, the liquidation of the agency means a blow to the international image of Ukraine.
”The European Union and our neighbors have separate water agencies – this is how the EU Water Framework Directive is being implemented. Ukraine, who declares the EU course, simultaneously takes a step back and demonstrates that it does not perceive water policy as a strategic one. It looks frankly absurd”, – he emphasized.
The economist also warned that such a solution posed a direct threat to investment.
”Davra is a key executor of international projects through which funds are being fired to Ukraine for the modernization of water infrastructure. Elimination means the loss of confidence of donors and partners, and therefore less money for critical reforms and infrastructure”, – the expert stressed.
He added that the greatest risk concerns people.
”During the war and climatic challenges, we run the risk of staying without a reliable water management system. It is a direct threat to safe drinking water, protection against floods and emergency response. What the government calls “optimization” is actually a dismantling of a strategic institution. It is not a reform, but an adventure that undermines economic stability and national security. If the Cabinet does not stop, every Ukrainian will feel the consequences – from agrarians and industrialists to ordinary families who risk staying without quality water”, – summarized the expert.
