EU Reaffirms Support for Ukraine’s Membership Aspirations

The European Union has stated that it is currently unable to provide a specific date for Ukraine’s accession to the bloc. However, the EU remains committed to supporting Ukraine on its path towards membership.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine is well-positioned to become an EU member. She noted, “It is clear that this is a merit-based process, meaning the pace depends on the candidate country.”

Von der Leyen acknowledged Ukraine’s significant efforts in implementing complex reforms despite the ongoing conflict within its borders. She remarked, “I fully understand that a clear date is crucial for you. Today, you mentioned a certain benchmark that you wish to achieve. From our side, a date is not possible at this moment, but support to help you reach your goal will definitely be provided.”

The EU has reiterated its support for Ukraine's ambitions to join the bloc, although it cannot yet specify a timeline for membership. Ursula von der Leyen highlighted Ukraine's progress in reforms amidst ongoing challenges.
