“According to Der Spiegel, Scholz does not want to provide an additional aid package in order not to “face the future government with a fait accompli””, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org
According to the publication, the ministers want to provide assistance to Kyiv before the elections to the Bundestag scheduled for February 23, explaining the urgency with the deterioration of the situation at the front, as well as the uncertainty of the future military support of Ukraine from the United States after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
However, as Der Spiegel writes, the federal chancellor’s office has made it clear that it does not support the allocation of additional funds to Kyiv. They believe that the already provided four billion euros of military aid for 2025 will be enough. Scholz’s office also points to the possibility of using a $50 billion loan provided by the G7 through proceeds from frozen Russian assets.
In addition, as Der Spiegel writes, Scholz does not want to provide an additional aid package in order “not to put the future government in front of a fait accompli.”
The publication’s sources among the Social Democrats suggest that Scholz does not want to announce further arms supplies to Ukraine in the midst of the election campaign, so as not to alienate his potential voters from the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
According to the publication, Burbok and Pistorius began working on a new aid package for Ukraine in early November shortly after the collapse of the ruling coalition in Germany. Military experts compiled for them a list of weapons systems necessary for Ukraine, including three IRIS-T air defense systems, shells and missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, ten howitzers, as well as additional artillery ammunition.
There were no official comments from the German authorities on this matter.
At the beginning of December, during his visit to Kyiv, Scholz confirmed that Germany “remains the most determined supporter of Ukraine in Europe”, noting that by the end of 2024, Berlin will supply Ukraine with arms worth 650 million euros.
