Callas: a solution to Ukraine cannot be reached without Ukraine

The European Union will be able to maintain unity despite the growing number of European governments that sympathize with Russia, said on January 14 the EU’s high representative for foreign and security policy, Kaya Callas.

“Despite difficult negotiations, we were able to maintain unity. It’s getting harder and harder. But I’m still confident that we can present a united position, because that’s the only way we’ll keep our strength,” she said at a meeting with journalists on Wednesday in Brussels, RFE/RL reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t really want peace, and that’s the main problem, said the head of the EU’s Foreign Policy Department.

“He wants a ceasefire in order to regroup and rearm his forces,” Callas clarified. We have already seen the ceasefire. The Russians have never observed a ceasefire. That is why it is important for Europe that the peace is sustainable and lasting.”

“There is no solution for Ukraine without Ukraine and no solution for Europe without Europe,” Kallas added.

In her opinion, it is premature to think about any European peacekeeping role, because Moscow is not interested in peace at the moment. Callas believes
that Europe is more interested in peace than Russia, which, according to a European diplomat, mistakenly believes that time is working in Moscow’s favor.

Kallas emphasized that the West should increase economic pressure on Russia. Because the provision of military support to Ukraine, increased economic pressure on Moscow and isolation of the Russian Federation at the international level are the only ways to prevent Russia from winning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that newly elected US President Donald Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.

Trump’s proposed special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, was tasked with negotiating an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. He said potential ceasefire talks could begin when Trump takes office, and in a December Fox News interview suggested the war could be “ended within the next few months.”

In an interview with the American podcaster Lex Friedman published on January 5, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that the first negotiations on the end of the war will be with the newly elected US President Donald Trump.

Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
